Self-focused worship produces weak believers

 Having a odd feeling!

Many times, as I was singing the modern worship songs at church, I had the odd feeling, that something wasn't right.

I was aware, that many worship songs are stuck in the Old Covenant, making us proclaim Anti-New-Covenant declarations and therefore undermining our faith; the words sound religious and the music is nice, but are these with good intend created praise songs biblically sound?

Worship songs are a form of teaching – you can’t sing one thing and believe another.

As we sing, the lyrics are repeated over and over, which is a form of meditation and if the lyrics are not in line with the Word of God, we begin to believe not in line with the Word of God.

Not everything that sounds and looks good is from God or is serving God’s purpose.

If fantastic light and sound shows are activating an off switch in our brains, so that we don’t examine anymore, if we hear and sing truth, then there is a problem.

A lot of well-intentioned songs are manipulative; they create inside the listener an emotionally altered state which he mistakes for a godly, spiritual state.

But there is a big difference!

Not long ago, I went to a traditional Protestant church, where we sang out of an old service book without any light show, drums and drama and the hymns caught my attention, they spoke greatly to my heart.

Now I realized, what was giving me a feeling of unease besides the fact, that many lyrics represent Old Covenant.

To show you, what I realized, I want to compare an old hymn with two newer praise songs. I printed specific words in bold for that purpose:

Song written by Daniel S. Warner, pub. 1888

By Thy blessed word obeying,
Lord, we prove our love sincere;
For we hear Thee gently saying,
“Love will do as well as hear

Refrain: Dear Redeemer, we would hallow
All Thy word so firm and true;
In Thy footsteps meekly follow,
Thy commands we love to do.

Feigned hearts Thy name professing,
Thy commandments cast aside;
But we feel Thy great salvation,
And in all Thy truth abide.

Every word Thy mouth hath spoken
Is essential to our life;

All Thy mandates love betoken,
To oppose them is but strife.

In Thy wisdom, Lord, confiding,
We will follow in Thy way;
With Thy love in us abiding,
’Tis delightful to obey.

Each commandment Thou hast given
Is a waymark on the road;

Leading up from earth to heaven,
To the blessed throne of God.

Now I am summarizing the meaning of the bold words:

We obey God’s word, we prove our love, we do what we hear from God, we love the Word and follow the commandments in humility, we profess God’s name, we feel our salvation, we abide in truth, we take God’s Word serious and know, we can’t live without it or we will miss the way.

Keep falling in love, Hillsong

I am found in Your embrace
Covered by Your love

You're my deepest dream I know
Your love so strong, spirit come

You lift me up to heaven's door
You restored my soul

I come here without Your touch
I need You so much, need You more

You're my rock and my redeemer
The rock on which I stand

I keep falling in love with You Lord
Every beat of my heart, breath that I take
Through the seasons that change, Your love remains
My hiding place, my home falling in love

Now I am summarizing the meaning of the bold words:

I am found and covered in God’s love, God is my deepest dream, God lifts me up to heaven, God is restoring my soul, I need God so much, need Him more

Jesus Culture ‘I need you more’

Chorus: I need You more,
more than yesterday
I need You more
More than words can say
I need You more
Than ever before
I need You Lord,
I need You Lord

Verse: More than the air I breathe
More than the song I sing
More than the next heartbeat
More than anything, and Lord as time goes by
I'll be by Your side
Cause I never want to go back to my old life

Bridge:
We give you the highest praise
We give you the highest praise
We give you the highest praise

Ending:
More than the air I breathe
More than the song I sing
More than anything
I need You more

Now I am summarizing the meaning of the bold words:

I need God more, more than anything, I never want to go back to my old life, we give God praise.

If you are honest with yourself, you already see the difference:

The hymn from 1888 is quite a good instruction, how to live a successful Christian life: by obedience, humility, being aware of your salvation, knowing and following the Word which is the substance of your life.

The song ‘Keep falling in love’ from Hillsong is very much feeling based and self focused.

It’s all about me and God, all about how I feel and what God does for me.

The only thing that I do, is falling in love with God, ‘have feelings’ for Him.

Rarely we find the word ‘we’ in these songs, the knowledge, that we belong to a group of people, a herd of sheep, and that our survival depends a great deal on sticking together and serving one another.

And this truth is more and more overwritten by the big ‘Me, myself and I’.

The song from Jesus Culture is even worse if you allow me to say that.

The variation of meaningful sentences is almost zero.

It is an ‘under the law’ cry out to God, repeated like a mantra.

This song gives us the impression that it’s not enough to just be saved, we always need more, more and more (as if God hasn't done enough).

Jesus said in John 6:35

“I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry,

and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually]."

(Amplified Bible).

We have all we ever need and all of God’s promises are yes and Amen.

We just have to believe by faith.

The singer of that song is longing for more feelings: feel blessed, feel God, feel joy, feel able and so on.

And we mistake feelings for spirituality.

This short examination of Christian songs proved, that Christianity today is very much feeling and experience based.

The influence of psychology and worldly tendencies can hardly be ignored.

We are addicted to good feelings, that’s why we love the positive preaching but dismiss truth that corrects us.

Most of today’s worship songs are observing what our soul needs, the message of the songs renders us passive, telling us, we are in a constant helpless state and need to receive.

God is the active one, the initiative comes from Him, we only love Him back and worship Him, wait on Him, we are not capable to do more…. Oh what a false gospel this is!

The devil’s ingenious mind found a way to make us believe that this mindset is godly humility and spirituality in it’s highest form.

And we receive what we believe: we are weak, hardly see any prayers answered, have no boldness to spread the gospel, unite with people we should never unite with, believe things to be OK that are totally against God’s word, just because we are earthly minded and not God focused (Word focused) anymore.

Today’s worship lyrics are helping a great deal to shut us down and if Satan can have us at that place, he knows we are no threat to him!

Yes, God wants that we worship Him, in spirit and in truth.

But what exactly is this?

That’s a good question for a later topic.

I don’t claim that all modern worship songs are wrong, but many, way too many are.

This short teaching is meant to be a wake-up call and I hope, it is helping you, to examine, what kind of words you allow to leave your mouth, and that you realize, what these words cause in your heart: They form your belief!

James 1:21

"So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside,

and humbly be glad for the wonderful message (the Word of God) we have received,

for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts."

We will challenge a best seller book which became a very popular movie but as for the Bible is concerned it is very,

very deceptive, especially for Christians.
